Technical requirements for design

Printable area size of a untrimmed newspaper Untrimmed newspaper is a printed matter, with a final format of 315x420 mm (without bleed), of which printed surface is 300x390mm. The lower edge of the newspaper must have 15 mm of empty space to avoid the set-off (staining) of ink (e.g. full color advertisements) in the design of the lower edge to the opposite side. The outer edge of the newspaper must have 15 mm of empty space for the needle holes of the folding operation.
Trimmed newspapers In the outer edges of trimmed newspaper the design elements reaching the edge must continue for 5 mm after the trimming line and forming the bleed area. All design elements (except elements with a bleed) must be located at least 4 mm inside the trimming line.
Color registration Newspaper design must take into account that the color registration in the lower edge of the tabloid newspaper is more problematic than in the upper level.
Overprint Colored objects (except 100% black) must not have defined overprint. Black overprint must be added to the design elements and texts (100% K) on colored background. Non-overprinted black – CMY:1%, K:100% - must be used on black surfaces on which overprinting must be avoided (e.g. the black frame covering the edge of a picture). Generally black overprint is added automatically at the printing house to improve printing quality.
Trapping of objects In the contact point of objects of different color the edge of the darker object has to cover the color of the lighter object with 0.15-0.4 mm trapping. Trapping is added automatically at the printing house to improve printing quality.
Line-art The minimum width in case of line-art has to be at least 0.15 mm. Thin line-art must not use more than two colours.
Texts 8 point or smaller (height less than 3mm, line width less than 0.3mm) knock out inside a colored surface nor (light color) texts consisting of several colors must not be used. The minimum height of italic or serif type in colored objects must be at least 10 points. To ensure contrast the reverse type must not be placed within screened areas less than 50% or in yellow background.

Pages on newsprint – coldset printing.

The color space of all pictures and vector objects CMYK Pantone tones, RGB, Lab etc are automatically converted to CMYK which may remarkably distort the tones requested by the client.
ICC profile for converting pictures to CMYK ISOnewspaper26v4.icc Reference file IFRA26
Maximum summarized raster percent (TIL – total ink limit) 240% In case of pictures it is ensured by the use of the right ICC profile, in case of vector graphics the fulfilment of the requirement must be ensured by the designer.
Screen frequency 85 lpi Pursuant to paper manufacturer’s recommendations
The limits for the reproduction of an integrated and uniform screen on a paper 3% - 90% No significant image parts shall rely on tone values outside of the above tone value reproduction limits.
Resolution power of the pictures 170 dpi
(double screen frequency)
The smaller decreases the quality of pictures, the bigger does not improve the quality, but increases the size of the files and makes their processing slower.
A digital increase of the separation power of low resolution pictures to the required level Such transformation is considered  as deliberate activity by the designer. The automatic inspection of the files will not detect it.
Larger black texts and spaces Use only black color
CMY 0%, K 100%
Large 4-color black surfaces remarkably increase the risk of staining.
Additional digital sharpening of pictures If possible, Unsharp Mask is to be used During the printing process the screen dots becomes fainter on the newsprint and reduces the sharpness of the pictures.

Pages on coated paper – heatset printing.

The color space of all pictures and vector objects CMYK Pantone tones, RGB, Lab etc are automatically converted to CMYK which may remarkably distort the tones requested by the client.
ICC profile for converting pictures to CMYK PSO_LWC_Improved_eci.icc Reference file FOGRA45L
Maximum summarized raster percent (TIL – total ink limit) 300% In case of pictures it is ensured by the use of the right ICC profile, in case of vector graphics the fulfilment of the requirement must be ensured by the designer.
Screen frequency 150 lpi Pursuant to paper manufacturer’s recommendations
The limits for the reproduction of an integrated and uniform raster on a paper 3% - 97% The color tone of no important part of the design must not be based on a raster beyond those limits (ISO12647-2).
Resolution power of the pictures in design 300 dpi
(double screen frequency)
The smaller decreases the quality of pictures, the bigger does not improve the quality, but increases the size of the files and makes their processing slower.
A digital increase of the separation power of low resolution pictures to the required level Kroonpress Ltd considers such transformation a deliberate activity by the designer. The automatic inspection of the files will not detect it.
